Weird Al Yankovic made a career out of parody songs. I've also noticing an increasing number of indie bands gaining national exposure by having their songs featured in TV ads. The Sea and Cake, for example, are currently featured in a Citi Bank ad and the Spirits had a national hit ("Drive") that was initially featured in a Hyundai ad. Music is a very powerful medium.
